Gary on the Kielder countdown to 100 marathons
GARY THWAITES has run the Kielder Marathon before. This well-known face at North East Running events is back this year on a very special countdown.
The 2019 Kielder Marathon will be Gary’s 99th marathon on his final countdown to an amazing 100 marathons.
“The Kielder Marathon route is great and if we get lucky with the weather then the views are stunning. Also, it’s great to catch up with loads of friends. So many people I know take part in at least once of the races over the weekend.”
The majority of Gary’s marathons have been in the UK and he cites the London Marathon as his favourite, commenting “The support from the crowds is like nothing I have ever experienced during a race. Also, I still get excited when I go to our capital.” Aside from London, Gary is happiest running in quieter races and loves running on trails. He is a familiar face at North East Marathon Club events, mixing his training with a running- related job as he makes medal hangers and donation boxes.
45-year-old Gary, pictured above with children Esme and George, has run all of his marathons on UK soil apart from Paris, Amsterdam and Helsinki.
“My wife Lisa’s mother is Finnish so going to Helsinki to run the marathon was pretty special. I’ll be running Berlin this year, which I can’t wait for.”
After Gary runs his 100th marathon at the North East Marathon Club Town Moor Marathon in November, he is in no rush to start counting towards 200! Gary plans to mix things up and run a variety of different distances next year.
” I would like to keep improving my marathon PB. I’m not doing some of my favourite local races because they are clashing with marathons this year so getting back to mixing things up in 2020 will be great.”
