What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
MARIE STEPHENS refuses to be beaten on her journey to Kielder Marathon 2017!
The 43 year old hairdresser told us:
“I have had a bad chest since I was young but was diagnosed with lung disease. I have always been fit but struggled with it.
When I found out about my lung disease I fought back by booking a marathon. I did Edinburgh marathon for Macmillan but hated it! I I wasn’t going to do another because I found it so hard but I wanted something tougher so Kielder it was.
I lost my man to cancer so I was fighting everything, so training and running was my escape. I was then diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago and had a mastectomy 5 months ago.
Getting out and running after that was amazing. I entered the Great North Run and the Kielder Marathon for 2017 then unfortunately I tripped and fell a few weeks ago and trying not to fall in the side of my mastectomy I fell heavy on my other side and broke my wrist in 6 places so I had to have another operation! I was well and truly out of action!
My next op on my breast is this month followed by another in April so training for Kielder will fit in just as I’m getting back on my feet.
My chest problem can kick off at different times do I don’t know when it’s going to appear… I just get out when I can! But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…
I couldn’t have done it without the support of Kim Scott (pictured with me) and the amazing These Girls Can Run running club.
GOOD LUCK Marie from all of us at the Kielder Marathon
