Kielder Half Marathon Ambassador – Richard Lane

Hello!
My name is Richard and I am delighted to be an Ambassador for the Kielder ½ marathon in 2020. I can’t remember a time when running hasn’t been a part of my life. I competed to county level in the 200m and 400m as a kid in Oxford, running at the Iffley Road track where Roger Bannister first achieved the sub 4-minute mile, and even won a Chariots of Fire-inspired run at school.
When I arrived at Leicester University in ’91 I was disappointed to find there wasn’t an active sprint club. I look back at this moment and wonder what I might have achieved if that had been different… Saying that I had designs on becoming a rock star so my running motivation at that time can probably be questioned – two activities that might be considered poor bedfellows although that seems to be changing with some high profile individuals managing both – Ricky from Kaiser Chiefs, for example.
So, life took different turns which brings us to today. I am Co-Founder & CEO of durhamlane, an established NE sales outsourcing, training & recruitment company. I have an amazing family who are growing up fast (nothing like going for a run with your 16 year-old son whose feet hardly seem to touch the ground). Time is precious and I don’t get to run as often as I’d like, which is why I’ve opted for the ½ marathon again rather than the full marathon.
I consider myself to be ‘reliably sporadic’ when it comes to training. 4 – 5 miles a couple of times a week is typical although I still back myself to run a sub 2 hour ‘half’.
Saying that, being an Ambassador is motivating me to run more, to train smarter and my goal is to achieve a PB in October. I am looking forward to sharing my journey with you and know that writing this blog will spur me on to do better. Thank you for that!
